Boysen Dam overlooking the Reservoir

Boysen Dam is a 220 foot earth-fill dam on the Wind River, in Wyoming. It is located along Hwy 20 between the towns of Shoshoni and Thermopolis, and is surrounded by Boysen Reservoir State Park. The current dam was constructed between 1947 and 1952, just upstream from a previous dam that had been built by Asmus Boysen in 1908 on land that was leased from the Shoshone and Arapaho tribes. The current dam is located at the mouth of the very historic Wind River Canyon. This canyon is not only a great ride, but full of very interesting sights and signs about the geology of the area. Check out the Blog link at the right and be sure to browse through the photos by clicking on one of them.

The construction of the new Boysen Dam caused the moving of a major railroad track that connected Billings, Montana with Casper, Wyoming that would have been flooded. The new track that had to be laid started near the new dam where a 1 ½ mile tunnel carried the tracks under the dam, under parts of the lake and around the edges of the reservoir.

This dam is featured on our 2012 t-shirts.
