DamTour 2012:

marker 8 ~ Curl Lake Dam ~ Washington ~  292 mi from PDX - 290 mi Sea-Tac.

Curl Lake Dam remotely located in the Umatilla National Forest in the southeast corner of Washington State on the Tucannon River. The closest town is Dayton Washington, which is approximately 40 miles by paved road to the west. The dam is on Tucannon Road also known as 2033-2303 Nat for Dev Road 47. It will intersect north of Dayton with Hwy 12, southeast of Starbuck and Hwy 261.

Here is Mike's Report: "Here is what we think of Curl Lake as a destination for the Dam Tour. It ain't no Hoover Dam! But a dam, it is. After you get over the fact that it isn't much of a dam there are many positives:

Nice road in. Pavement is good to very good. No gravel. Scenery goes from normal dry eastern WA to steep terrain with farms in the valleys, to lightly wooded areas with steep canyons. It is a scenic ride. Access is safe and easy from the road. The parking lot is gravel, but in good shape. It is easy to find. Right next to the road. The lake was in a large forest fire about 5 years ago so one can see the results close up. Lewis and Clark ate lunch on this road! Damn, it don't get much better than that!

Places to stay: Camp at forest camp grounds nearby or at the Last Resort KOA Kampground. Dayton, WA is a nice town with a cool motel and some really good restaurants. Just outside of Dayton, on the Patit Road, is a cool representation of a campsite for the Lewis and Clark excursion. Well worth the quick side trip (see link to right), but don't head to the dam from here, unless you want to do some gravel.

On the negative side: You have to ride in and out on the same road (Tucannon). Unless you can handle some steep, wash boarded gravel roads. It ain't no hoover dam. But for us it is about the ride. We don't much care about the dams. Note: the 'lake' is empty now, it is being cleaned out and should be full of trout in the spring".

"We vote: Thumbs up on Curl Lake".

**Thank you Mike McClure (part of the W2 Gang) and Bob Parrish & Dwight Gladden ...for scouting, and photos, comments on this dam.
