Cushman Dam No. 1 is on the North Fork of the Skokomish River in Mason County, Washington, and creates Lake Cushman. At Hoodsport, on Hwy 101, head northwest(at the Cushman - Staircase Rec Area sing) onto Lake Cushman Road(SR119) for about 4½ miles on up the hill from the highway. When you see the sign to the dam and the lodge, follow to Lake Cushman. The View area with the Cushman No. 1 sign, right off the road is as close as you can get to the dam. The gated road does continue down .01 mi but the gate is locked. This is a large turnout specifically for viewing the dam.
If you are coming in from the south on Hwy 101(Hood Canal), you will pass the Cushman No.2 Powerhouse near Potlatch. This in not the 'dam'. It is the powerhouse for Cushman No. 2, a smaller dam just downstream of No. 1, that creates Kokanee Lake. Interesting to stop and look at, but a photo here will not count.
**Thank you Jim Carroll ...for scouting, photos, and information on this dam.
