~ Cle Elum Dam ~ Washington Dam
~ 232.5 miles from PDX.

Cle Elum Dam is about 8 miles northwest of Cle Elum on the Cle Elum River and creates the beautiful Cle Elum Lake. Although a natural lake, Cle Elum Lake's capacity and discharge is controlled by Cle Elum Dam, a 165 foot (50 m) high earthfill structure built in 1933.
The name Cle Elum, which means "swift water" in the language of the Kittitas Indians, was given to a river, a town, and also a beautiful tranquil lake created by the construction of the Cle Elum Dam. Cle Elum Dam and Lake Cle Elum lie within the U-shaped glacial valley of the Cle Elum River. Successive multiple advances of alpine glaciers during the Pleistocene have formed this U-shaped valley.
