Gorge Dam

The Gorge Dam is on the Skagit River near Newhalem, WA., on the beautiful North Cascades Hwy. Continuing east from Newhalem, the road passes through a deep, narrow gorge, where you can glimpse Gorge Creek Falls before reaching Gorge Dam, the first and smallest of the dams along this stretch of the Skagit River. The Gorge Dam and Powerhouse were built by Seattle City Light and completed in September of 1924.

The North Cascades Highway was completed in 1972. Closed in the winter, this scenic highway crosses two passes: Rainy Pass (4860 ft., 1481 m) and Washington Pass (5483 ft., 1671 m)

The Gorge Overlook Trail is 3.5 miles east of Newhalem. The area overlooks Gorge Creek Falls and has an accessible interpretive loop trail with views of Gorge Dam and Lake.
