~ Haystack Dam ~ Oregon ~ 128 mi from PDX - 284 mi Sea-Tac.
Haystack Dam which creates Haystack Reservoir is about 3 miles from the city of Culver and is 45 minutes from Bend. It is an irrigation storage facility for North Unit Irrigation District and is fed primarily by an offshoot canal originating from the Crooked River and by three runoff streams. It was named after a butte to the south, the dam was constructed in 1956-1957 which is earth filed. The terrain-surrounding Haystack is plain, consisting of sage and irrigated pastureland that is typical of high desert landscape.
It lies in Jefferson County, one mile east of Hwy 97(via SW Jericho Lane to Haystack Drive), 3 miles east of Culver and access is paved. If you want a bit of a dual sport ride, you can also access this dam from the east side off Hwy 26.
