Wild Horse Dam is located in northeastern Nevada on Hwy 255. Wild Horse Reservoir is built on the East Fork Owyhee River in Elko County. It lies on Federal lands administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and leased to the Duck Valley Indian Reservation (Sho-Pai). Pay heade... The first dam was built in 1937, covering the Owyhee Meadows, but proved to be too weak. The current dam was constructed downstream from the original and finished in 1969, and doubled the size of the reservoir. And, yes, the name came from the large herds of wild horses that once roamed the valley.
