Long Lake Dam creates Long Lake on the Spokane River about 36 miles northwest of Spokane, Washington. Long Lake Dam is a '2005 Repeat' dam on the Spokane River. You can view this dam from Long Lake Dam road off from Hwy 231 below/ south of the dam, or from the nearby overlook that offers a scenic view of the dam's spillway on the north side off from Hwy 291. The dam is located about mid-way between Reardan and Springdale off Hwy231 just south of the Hwy 291 junction.
The Spokane River flows 111 miles from Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to Lake Roosevelt, which is the Columbia River impounded by Grand Coulee Dam. The lower 29 miles of the Spokane River is known as the Spokane Arm of Lake Roosevelt. Long Lake Dam is one of seven dams on the Spokane, from Post Falls Dam at the outlet from Lake Coeur d'Alene to Little Falls Dam at river mile 29. All have hydroelectric generators.
When it was completed in 1915, Long Lake was "the world's highest spillway dam." Its turbines were also the largest (both in size and capacity) of any in existence at the time. It is now in the National Register of Historic Places, as is Little Falls Dam, from the 2009 season.
