Navajo Dam is on the San Juan River, which is a tributary of Colorado river in rim-rock country in northwest New Mexico on NM Hwy 51, which is just 18 miles from the Colorado state line. This earth-filled dam is located approximately 40 miles northeast of Farmington, New Mexico and 50 miles Southeast of Durango, Colorado. The reservoir this dam creates is Navajo lake, which is 35 miles long with over 150 miles of public shoreline.
The Navajo Lake Marina located on the southern end of the lake near the dam, has a full service store and sells fuel. Not only can you drive across this dam, there is also a road that traverses the face of the dam from top to bottom, as can be seen in the photo above. The sign photo(at right)is at the bottom of the dam. A short rive from the base of the dam is a little community named Navajo Dam Community, that has fuel and food as well.
There are many exciting routes to and from this magnificent area, with many things to see and explore. Do some research. I am told a nice route might be through Ignacio, Durango and Ridgway, Colorado. Another area to explore might be the Moab, Utah area and experience Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Or try Highway 261 near Mexican Hat on the way to 4 corners and the Navajo Dam (if you don't mind a bit of gravel) as suggested on our Facebook page, by rider Bob Parrish.
