DamTour 2007 :

Welcome to 2007DamTour Stats . . .

Wow. . . This year we had "94" registered riders, the DamTour is really expanding. We started very small a few years ago, with riders signed-up from only the PDX area and Vancouver. This year we registered "46" riders from Oregon as far out as The Dalles, Astoria, and Eugene, and "46" riders from Washington, as far away as Camano Island, and Colville. And, we signed-up our first riders from Canada and a rider from Idaho. Thirty-five of our registered riders did not send in any ride reports. This of course does not mean they didn't ride. It does mean that "59" of our riders made the charts with at least one dam. Last year we only had "59" riders total. Of the 93 bikes listed(one forgot to write it in), or signed up with, in this years DamTour (we know some people have more than one) there were "24" Yamaha's, "16" Kawasaki's, "16" Honda's, "13" Suzuki's, "11" Harley's, and "10" BMW's, and "1" each Victory, Moto Guzzi, and Indian. We received a total of "708" ride reports and many more than that photos. As usual, some of these "facts & figures" are only as accurate as the reports I received. So, below are more "stats" as reported, by message board posting, or emails to me. . . Cool, huh?

Here are some categories level . Where do you fit in?

The table at the right shows how many visits each dam had and the approximate distance from PDX, "one way". This does not include those not reported, nor second, third or more trips per rider. This totals up as "708" dam visits by our riders. That's a lot of "dam" riding. The least visited dam was Mica Dam with 17 visits, and the most visited dam was Green Peter with 47 visits.

Our "Lunch Awards" were held on Oct. 14th this year, and we had "14" riders of the 59 on the rankings table, that finished and earned the much sot after crystal trophy. Rider Charles Katopodis earned a crystal shot glass wink, being one shot (dam) away from the valued finishers prize, with "19" dams. New this year, I tired to keep record of the year to use as certificate awards, some for milestone like rides, or events, and some for the fun of it. I think it brought a surprised smile too most and a lot of laughter.

Keith Spicer earned the "Around the Dams in 8 Days" award doing all "twenty" dams in 8 days, on a 4286-mile long trip. Bryan Townsend and Dean Scheel, each got the "Tenacious Explores" award, for actually finding Curlew Dam -(a quote from the ride report)

". . . under a road bridge on the North side of the lake. We actually had a cop guide us there, as he got fairly obsessed once we convinced him there was a dam. He got his dispatcher to get a hold of someone in the Corps of Engineers who looked it up. " " . . .technically a spillway they told us."

Another, for fun but not so funny award went to Krista Lary, we called it "Cage Dodging 101", and it came with a free sign-up for the future. Her first dam trip of the season, to Green Peter dam, a cage went out of his lane on a blind corner and that was the end of Krista’s bike, and almost the end of Krista (broken back). The back healed and she made it to the awards party and was looking for a new bike. Other awards passed out were "pillion rider of the year". Cheryl Madsen, who stared at the back of a helmet to 15 of this years dams. And the "most dam repeats", which was Dan Stombaugh, and, too many more to put here.

Road/Mileage Report . . .

Hard to believe how many miles we travel while doing the DamTour. We have lots of "butt burning" stories from the forum and ride reports so check them out. The miles totaled up this year... WOW. For this years dams, if a single rider starts for each dam from PDX and returns getting just that dam, well, to do all twenty dams would be "12,386 miles." That is one rider, riding to all twenty dams in "one dam" trips. This is not making side trips, or snagging multiple dams on a single trip, which is easy to do, and can either reduce or add more miles.

Again we will take it a step further. Let's look at how many of our riders have been to each dam in the table at right (not including repeats and 3-peat’s). Fifty-nine riders managed a total of "708" visits to these dams. If my calculations are correct, and we can assume that each rider did "single dam" trips, that would mean that the "possible total miles", the DamTour Riders rode this year, could be "380,630 miles". That's 157,230 miles more than last year and that makes it just over "15" times around the earth, or a trip to the moon and just over half way back. LOL Of course this is all hypothetical from our dam mileages, but interesting all the same.

Here are some "First's" for 2007. . .

First Dam of the season was Fern Ridge by Steve Folkestad (7001) and Jim & Cheryll Malisch (7002 & 7004), and Leaburg Dam by Steve Folkestad (7001) and Dan Stombaugh (7003), on February 17th. First Bonus Dam of the season was Mica Dam by Terry & Lynda Lahman (7077) on April 29th. First to Finish (by a few hours ahead of Keith Spicer) all twenty dams and also having the most "dam first" this year was John Deurbrouck (7017).

And for another DT Stat, Fred Dykins signed-up late in the season on July 26th. Although it was a late start, Fred had “18” dams by September 7th, Earning him a "Late Start - Great Finish" Award. Way to Go !!!

Yet another DT Stat ... We had some long distance riders, Terry & Lynda Lahman, looking for practice. They made the longest single damtour trip. Starting from Snoqualmie on Friday night after work, headed to Portland, then on Saturday morning headed out to do all "14" dams on the Columbia River up to Mica Dam (being the first to Mica in the snow). Stayed the night in Revelstoke to return home Saturday afternoon. Now how’s that for some damtour riding?
